Intro
Vitoria-Gasteiz is hosting a new edition of the CARMELO BERNAOLA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL, which is characterised by its firm commitment to the music of our day. Performers of international acclaim will be participating in concerts at the Jesus Guridi Conservatory of Music and at ARTIUM (Basque Contemporary Art Museum-Centre) and offering proposals that reflect the diversity of the most avant-garde music.
Kicking off the festival will be the UMZE Chamber Ensemble, a prestigious chamber orchestra from Budapest directed by Zoltán Rácz. The UMZE Chamber Ensemble specialises in disseminating the contemporary Hungarian repertoire and will be presenting several premieres in a programme that combines twentieth-century classics with recently created works by young composers.
The 3.1 Culturas concert featuring Julián Elvira originated in the interest in innovation inspired by the Pronomo flute and its capacity for reproducing the musical traditions of several regions in the world, selected for their specific proximity to this musical instrument.
Frédérique Cambreling’s extensive artistic career enables him to perform a large part of today’s harp repertoire. His eclecticism and passion for all forms of expressions related to the harp has led him to take part in the entire gamut of musical demonstrations.
Josep Lluís Galiana (saxophones) and Gregorio Jiménez (live electronics) are two sound creators with longstanding and consolidated careers in the fields of experimentation and improvisation. These two artists are presenting Inside, the work they have been exploring in the field of the free electro-acoustic improvisation for some time now.
The Éclats ensemble from Bordeaux is one of the most novel groups performing today. Their presentation, a musical show entitled Songs, is a new project that intermingles East and West and is the result of constant experimentation and visual and sound investigation.
Fantangueando, a concert featuring Silvia Márquez (harpsichord) and Gorka Hermosa (accordion), is a programme inspired by dance, a journey to the past that is contemporary at the same time: Baroque forms and contemporary composition, new and ancient instruments that meld in a programme full of rhythm and enlivened with lights and spaces that span from the castizo Madrid of the eighteenth-century to the Buenos Aires of the tango.
The closing concert will feature the festival’s group-in-residence, the Ensemble Espacio Sinkro from Vitoria-Gasteiz, presenting a new programme conceived especially for the occasion. The concert will include a special event: the world premieres of two works by major contemporary composers Sofía Martínez and Félix Ibarrondo.
